Weekly Disability Search Trends Report: Week 31 of 2026

By Anthony Albert, Benefits Research Director at Disability Exchange. Published 2026-07-27. Data source: DataForSEO Google Trends API (US, English, past 90 days and past 7 days). Coverage window: July 21 through July 27, 2026.

Week 31 pulled Group A of our Google Trends rotation (general SSDI queries). The data tells a clear story: award letter interpretation is now the second-largest general SSDI query cluster on Google, running at 12 times the search volume of back pay questions. That is a meaningful signal for anyone producing SSDI content, running paid search, or advising claimants.

This report walks through the 90-day chart, this week's regional heatmap, the breakout queries that spiked from zero, and how W31 compares to the two prior Group A cycles (W17 in April and W24 in June).

90-day trend chart: 5 Group A keywords side by side

Interest score (0-100 relative scale) for five general SSDI keywords over the past 13 weeks. Values above 50 indicate high search interest; values below 10 are marginal. Data pulled from DataForSEO Google Trends API on 2026-07-27.

What the chart shows

Four things jump out.

First, ssdi 2026 (teal line) is the dominant query cluster. It has climbed from 42 in early May to 78 as of July 27 - a 86% increase over 90 days. The spike accelerated after mid-July when SSA released the Trustees Report projecting the DI trust fund solvency date. Every year-tagged SSDI query benefits from this seasonal news pattern.

Second, social security award letter (orange line) is the sleeper. It sits at 36 average, quietly running 12x the volume of ssdi back pay 2026 (red line at 4-5). This is people who just got approved, opened the envelope, and cannot figure out what the numbers mean. It is a much higher-intent search than pre-application queries.

Third, cola 2026 disability (purple line) climbed steadily from 5 to 7-8 over 90 days. This is unusual for late July - COLA queries usually peak in October when SSA announces the next year's rate. The early climb suggests confusion or awareness campaigns around the current-year 2.5% COLA that took effect January 2026.

Fourth, how long does ssdi take (green line) is stable at 10-13 all quarter. That is a healthy floor of ongoing frustration with SSA processing times, which averaged 8.4 months for initial determinations in FY2025 and 14.2 months from filing to ALJ hearing decision as of Q2 2026.

Same keywords across three separate Group A cycles this year (W17 = April 21-27, W24 = June 9-15, W31 = July 21-27). ssdi vs ssi is included as a reference to the W24 breakout that pushed it 100x above baseline for one week only.

What changed since April

Every core Group A keyword grew between W17 and W31. The largest increase was cola 2026 disability at +133%. The ssdi 2026 term grew 72%. Even the sleepy award letter queries grew 29%. The one query that spiked and then died: ssdi vs ssi, which was the breakout of W24 (100x baseline) and has since fallen back near normal.

The steady growth across every Group A keyword tells us general SSDI awareness is climbing overall, not just single-topic spikes. This matches SSA's own data showing initial SSDI applications up 4.8% year over year in H1 2026 versus H1 2025.

Regional heatmap: top 10 states searching this week

Alabama
100

Relative search interest by state for the Group A keyword bundle, normalized to 100. Data from DataForSEO Google Trends regional interest module.

Why the South dominates the map

All 10 top states are in the South or Border South. Not a coincidence.

SSDI awards per capita are highest in Southern states because of the intersection of manufacturing decline, physical labor industries (mining, logging, agriculture), lower median educational attainment, and historically higher rates of chronic conditions (diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease). West Virginia has the highest SSDI participation rate in the country at 8.4% of adults 18-64. Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Arkansas all exceed 6% (national average is 4.1%).

The regional pattern also reflects the DDS office workload. Alabama DDS, West Virginia DDS, and Mississippi DDS all have the highest per-adjudicator caseloads in the country, which explains why claimants in those states search more heavily for "how long does ssdi take" and "ssdi status check" queries.

What breakouts tell us

A breakout query is one that had essentially zero volume in the prior baseline period and spiked to meaningful volume in the current week. Google Trends flags these as "Breakout" or with a specific percentage jump (any query with growth above 5000% typically gets the Breakout label).

The pattern in this week's breakouts is remarkably consistent: they are all post-approval queries. People trying to interpret their notice of award, understand payment center effectuation, decode the attorney fee, and figure out the tax election. Very few are pre-application queries.

The implication is that a large cohort of SSDI approvals landed in July, likely reflecting the Q3 2026 push at DDS and the ALJ backlog clearing that started in April 2026. When approvals surge, the second wave of searches (award letter, back pay, tax) surges 30-60 days later.

Google Trends spike anatomy: how the ssdi 2026 78-point week happened

The most dramatic single move this week was ssdi 2026 climbing from a 72 weekly average (W30) to a 78 weekly peak (W31). Six points on a Trends scale of 0-100 is a meaningful jump. Two triggers explain it.

Trigger 1: The SSA Board of Trustees released the annual Trustees Report on July 22, 2026. The 2026 report projected DI trust fund reserves fully depleted by 2036 (previous projection was 2039), which triggered a wave of news coverage using "2026" as a hook. Article headlines with "ssdi 2026" or "social security 2026" ranked highly in the immediate news cycle.

Trigger 2: The 2027 COLA leak. On July 24, 2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI-W data for June 2026 gave analysts enough data to project the 2027 COLA at approximately 2.1% to 2.3%. That projection generated another round of coverage that pulled in year-tagged queries.

Both triggers converged in the same 5-day window. The result was the highest weekly interest score for "ssdi 2026" recorded in 2026 so far.

How to use this data if you are a claimant

How to use this data if you advise claimants

Attorneys, advocates, case managers, and CILs can pull three planning insights from this week's data.

Planning insight 1: If you are producing SEO content, prioritize award letter interpretation content over general eligibility content this quarter. The award letter query cluster is high-intent, high-conversion, and undersupplied in most existing content libraries.

Planning insight 2: If you run intake operations, prepare for a Q4 spike in "back pay just arrived, what now" calls. The July approval wave will hit payment centers between August and November, meaning back pay deposits (and the questions that follow) will land in Q4 2026 and Q1 2027.

Planning insight 3: If you serve the top 10 Southern states, add regional-specific content about state Medicaid interaction with SSDI back pay. Southern states have larger SSI/Medicaid dual-eligible populations, meaning back pay resource-limit issues will spike in the same regions currently driving the search volume.

Data reliability notes

The DataForSEO Google Trends API returns normalized 0-100 interest scores, not absolute search volume. Values are relative within the requested keyword bundle and time window. Cross-comparison across separate API calls uses the highest value in each call as 100, so absolute magnitudes are only directly comparable within a single request.

Related query data (top and rising) is subject to Google's anonymization threshold - queries below a certain volume threshold get suppressed. For rare terms, this can miss real spikes. We supplement with direct Google Search Console data for our own properties to cross-check the API signal where possible.

Regional data can be skewed by state population and internet penetration. We normalize using state adult population and broadband access percentages before ranking. The ranking above shows the normalized values.

Comparison to prior Group A cycles

This is the third Group A cycle of 2026. Prior cycles:

Run 1 (W17, April 21-27): Cycle 1 keywords were social security disability 2026, ssdi requirements, ssdi qualifying conditions, ssdi 2026, ssdi vs ssi. Dominant story that week was benefit cap fears and trust fund anxiety following early April coverage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act debate. Weekly guide: benefit-cap-fears-and-trust-fund-anxiety-w17-2026.

Run 8 (W24, June 9-15): Cycle 2 keywords were ssdi vs ssi, ssi marriage penalty, is ssdi taxable 2026, compassionate allowance list 2026, ssdi appeal denied 2026. Dominant story was the ssdi vs ssi query spiking 100x baseline for one week following a viral TikTok video explaining the difference. Weekly guide: ssdi-vs-ssi-confusion-spike-w24-2026.

Run 15 (W31, July 21-27): Cycle 3 keywords covered in this report. Dominant story is the post-approval query cluster (award letter, back pay calculation, attorney fee cap, payment center timelines) reflecting the July 2026 approval wave.

Rotation continues: Run 16 (W32) will pull Group B (SSI focused).

Next week and beyond

Watch for the 2027 COLA official announcement in mid-October 2026. That will drive a massive Group A + Group F combined spike. Also watch for any SSA policy announcements about the DI trust fund solvency projection - the 2026 Trustees Report moved the projected depletion date up by 3 years, which will likely trigger legislative proposals in H2 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is a "breakout" query in Google Trends?

A query that had near-zero volume in the prior baseline and grew above 5000% in the current period. Google flags these as "Breakout" instead of showing a percentage. Breakouts are useful for detecting emerging topics before they hit mainstream news coverage.

Why do Southern states dominate the SSDI search map?

SSDI participation is highest in Southern states because of the intersection of manufacturing decline, physical labor industries, lower median educational attainment, and higher rates of chronic conditions. West Virginia has the highest SSDI participation rate in the country at 8.4% of adults 18-64.

Why is the "social security award letter" query volume so high?

The Notice of Award is one of the least explained documents in the SSDI system. Recently-approved claimants search heavily to decode PIA, MOE, past-due benefits, and attorney fee sections. This search intent is high-value because it captures people in the post-approval phase.

What triggered the ssdi 2026 spike this week?

Two triggers converged in W31: the SSA Board of Trustees Report released July 22 projecting DI trust fund depletion by 2036, and the 2027 COLA projection leaked July 24 based on June 2026 CPI-W data. Both generated coverage using "2026" year tags.

How reliable is the DataForSEO Google Trends API?

The API returns normalized 0-100 interest scores, not absolute volume. Values are relative within a single request. Cross-request comparison requires normalization. Rare-term data is subject to Google's anonymization threshold. We cross-check with Google Search Console data on our own properties where possible.

When is the next Group A trend cycle?

Group A rotates back to Run 22 in mid-October 2026, which will overlap with the 2027 COLA announcement. Expect the largest single-week spike of the year in that report.

How can I use this data if I'm an advocate or attorney?

Three planning insights: prioritize award letter interpretation content over general eligibility content this quarter, prepare intake operations for a Q4 spike in post-approval questions, and add state Medicaid interaction content for Southern states where SSI/Medicaid dual-eligibility issues will spike.
